About the Event
Kiara Bulley is a Brisbane based designer and illustrator. She runs the fashion brand Bulley Bulley (www.bulleybulley.com) in partnership with her sister, is a Co-Director for the fashion collective The Stitchery Collective (www.thestitcherycollective.org.au) and has worked extensively across fashion, costume and education for the last decade.
In these full day workshops, Kiara will guide you through some elements of textile and fashion design that are key to her own practice. This will be split into two session. In the morning session participants will use abstraction techniques to develop a motif for their surface textile design. They will also experiment with hand techniques of surface decoration, such as painting, drawing and stitching.
In the afternoon session, Kiara will guide participants through some fascinating details from garments in history. Following this, participants will embark on cutting and making their own simple garment from their newly designed textile.
This workshop is suited to anyone from a beginner-intermediate level of sewing experience up. It will be helpful if you are confident in how to use a sewing machine – threading and basic machine functions.
The workshop fee covers all material expenses including fabric, paints, posca, embroidery materials and shared use of other equipment such as scissors, thread, paint brushes etc.
You will walk away from the workshop with your own wearable shirt!
What to bring:
- Lunch, snacks and drinks (on-site fridges will be available). Tea and coffee provided onsite.
- Visual inspiration: photos, small object, magazine clippings etc that excite you. ( I will also bring a range of materials that inspire me!)
- A sewing machine if you have one with an extension cord. Please make sure that your machine is in good working order if you are bringing it along. There will also be 2 sewing machines provided by the facilitator for workshop participants to share.
